Streamlining Traditional Craftsmanship with 3D Printing: A Local Gunsmith’s Story
At Apeng Electrical, we pride ourselves on solving problems through innovative solutions. Recently, we had the opportunity to assist a local gunsmith who specialises in creating one-off parts for decommissioned guns—pieces that blend artistry and history.
While our original task was to repair a variable speed lathe, the visit sparked an exciting conversation about how modern technology—specifically 3D printing—can transform traditional, labour-intensive craftsmanship.
The Challenge: Traditional Techniques and Labour Time
The gunsmith’s process for creating a part (or “master”) was impressive but time-consuming. Their original process involved:
Creating 2D drawings of the part.
Handcrafting the master part using traditional techniques (5+ days of labour).
Making a mould from the master.
Casting a wax replica of the part.
Producing a rubber mould.
Finally, casting the part in brass.
While this method resulted in beautiful, high-quality parts, it came with challenges:
The labour-intensive process took up to 5 days to produce a single master.
Casting could cause shrinkage or deformation, requiring additional adjustments to the master—a time-consuming task.
Scaling production to reduce costs and reach more clients seemed unattainable with these limitations.
Our Solution: Integrating 3D Printing into the Process
We introduced the gunsmith to a streamlined process using 3D printing. Here’s how it differs:
Start with the 2D design.
Convert the design to a 3D model using CAD software.
3D print the part as the master using high-quality printing materials.
Continue with their existing process: moulding, casting, and finishing.
In this example, we reduced the time taken to create the master part from 5 days to just 6 hours, producing a near-perfect part on the first attempt.
Key Benefits of 3D Printing for the Gunsmith
Significant Time Savings
The shift from traditional handcrafting to 3D printing slashed production time drastically.
The gunsmith can now focus on refining other parts of the process, rather than labouring over a single master.
Easier Adjustments for Shrinkage or Deformation
With 3D modelling software, adjustments to the master (e.g., scaling or remodelling) are straightforward and fast.
This eliminates the need for manual rework, saving further time and effort.
Scalability for Larger Production Runs
Faster master production means the gunsmith can now create more parts in less time.
This allows them to reduce their prices and reach more clients who appreciate their work as a form of art.
Consistency and Precision
3D printing delivers accurate, repeatable results with fine details—ideal for creating precise parts that maintain the gunsmith’s high standards.
Blending Tradition with Innovation
By introducing 3D printing into their workflow, the gunsmith can maintain the artistry and quality of traditional craftsmanship while benefiting from modern efficiency. This combination enables them to expand their work and make unique pieces more accessible to clients.
At Apeng Electrical, we believe in finding the best solutions for every business, whether it’s through repair, retrofit, or replacement. In this case, 3D printing not only streamlined production but also unlocked new possibilities for growth and creativity.
